Gerhard, my cousin

Gerhard with Nicolai Kirche in the background. It was in this church that the Peaceful Revolution began, and brought about conditions that led to the collapse of the DDR (communist government).
The church was full of people (including Gerhard), and those people did not know that it would not lead to bloodshed. The pastor in the church took the risk and led the movement; the STASI (secret police) came in and sat in the front rows holding up newspapers so the people would not be able to see the front where the pastor was. He quietly asked people to move to the balconies (seldom used).
Later everyone went outside and gathered in the large open space between the Gewandhaus (concert hall) and the Opern Haus. Everything remained peaceful, and change came about. The peaceful revolution in the DDR began in Leipzig, and spread across the country.
